Spice it Up!

Spices!  Do you add flavor to your food by experimenting with and using different kinds of spices and seasonings?

Cinnamon, basil, cumin, garlic, paprika, sage, chili powder, turmeric, cloves, chili pepper flakes, ginger, parsley, oregano, dill, thyme…..countless options that are extremely healthy for you!

Try cooking that old boring chicken breast in coconut oil with some ginger, garlic and turmeric. Marinate shrimp in lime juice, chili pepper flakes and hot smoked paprika……..step out of the “salt and pepper” box and delve deep into the world of spices!

Are you aware that most of these spices have wonderful health benefits that come along with these diverse flavors? Here are a few for you to chew on….

*Turmeric – proven to reduce inflammation and fight off cancer

*Ginger – another anti-inflammatory, also good for proper digestion

*Cumin – has antibacterial properties and is a source of iron

*Basil – one of my favorites; has phytochemicals that may help lower cortisol (a stress hormone) and help to clear up skin

*Cinnamon – works in the body as an antioxidant and helps curb that sweet tooth

*Chili peppers – helps suppress appetite and useful in reducing pain

My favorite place to buy spices locally is called Savory Spice Shop in Birkdale. Great prices and good quality spices.  If you are local, go check them out & pick up a new spice to try this weekend.

Cheers to you and your health!
